President Brazil signed the Presidents Climate Commitment. A green purchasing policy defined by the National Association of Educational Procurement has been adopted. A sustainability task force has been organized to review campus sustainability efforts and point out areas for improvement.
Trinity purchases 5 percent of its electricity from wind energy sources and is exploring strategies to increase the percentage of energy purchased from renewable sources. The university has installed electric meters on all dorms and is expanding the monitoring to classroom and office buildings.
Trinity serves fair trade coffee and organic produce, and uses compostable to-go containers made from bamboo fiber. Excess food is donated to the San Antonio Food Bank and waste oil is recycled. Composting has recently begun on campus. Discounts are given with a reusable mug.
The President’s Task Force on Sustainability has recommended that all future, major capital improvements aim for LEED Silver certification. One dorm renovation project is applying for LEED certification. Electrical appliances and water fixtures are being retrofitted to reduce resource use in all buildings.
All first-year students receive a reusable water bottle. Trinity has two, paid Eco-Reps internships, two appointed student representatives to the President’s Task Force on Sustainability, and two student environmental organizations.
The 117-acre campus promotes walking, and the university is served by municipal public transit. A student group is initiating a bike-share program, and there are two hybrid vehicles in the campus fleet.
The university makes part of its shareholder voting record available to all members of the school community, including faculty, staff, students, and alumni. Information on investment holdings is available only to trustees and senior administrators.
The university aims to optimize investment return and is exploring, but not currently invested in, renewable energy funds or similar investment vehicles.
Part of the endowment is in mutual funds. For separately managed accounts, most of the proxy voting is handled by investment managers. Occasionally, the vice president of fiscal affairs determines a proxy vote.
