Louisiana State University has created a sustainability committee of faculty, staff, and students. The purchasing department buys Energy Star appliances, green cleaning products, and recycled paper. LSU will hire a manager of campus sustainability this year.
The new Campus Committee for Sustainability is planning to assess LSU's carbon footprint. LSU has been awarded more than $8 million in federal and state grants for energy audits and the implementation of energy conservation measures. The university has made many efficiency upgrades, such as installing new efficient windows, lighting systems, boilers, and monitoring HVAC control management systems to optimize energy use.
The dining halls serve local, hormone-free milk, antibiotic-free chicken and pork, cage-free eggs, and local produce. Dining services sources its ice cream from LSU's own dairy and is working with the university's agriculture department to develop a composting program. Dining halls are switching to corn resin to-go containers.
All new construction requires a tree preservation plan to help maintain existing green spaces on campus. LSU does not have a green building policy at this time, but is working with the state of Louisiana to incorporate LEED requirements into state design and construction standards.
ECO at LSU is an active student group that organizes campus sustainability initiatives and is part of the Campus Climate Challenge. Students work on transportation and campus biking programs, including the Easy Streets program, as well as climate change issues. Students have membership on the new Campus Committee for Sustainability.
LSU's Easy Streets program, through the efforts of staff and student organizers, has reduced vehicular traffic on campus by 62 percent. LSU has been increasing its use of electric vehicles and high-efficiency carts for transportation across campus. The recreation department has established a bicycle rental program.
The Louisiana State University Foundation makes a list of endowment holdings available to the public by request, as per open records laws, and is accessible online. The university does not make its shareholder voting record public.
