The university's sustainability council has drafted a sustainability policy that is currently under review for approval. The staff includes a part-time sustainability coordinator. President Schlegel has declared sustainability to be a pillar of university operations, but no formal commitments have been signed or policies enacted.
The university is working with a local electric utility to develop a solar system project on campus. The electricity generated will be sold back to the utility and may also be purchased by the school. Creighton has plans to engage in a performance contract for energy conservation, focusing on awareness and sustainability, including the use of renewable energy and occupancy sensors.
Dining services contracts with a dairy adjacent to the campus, as well as a regional produce supplier. There are some organic and fair trade products available. A significant discount on beverages is offered through a reusable mug program. The university also runs a comprehensive recycling program, which is being upgraded to become single-stream.
New construction at Creighton is designed to meet LEED standards. Current projects include the Harper Center, the Wareham Building, a women’s athletic facility, and a fitness facility. The plan for the new public safety and shuttle services building includes water-source heat pumps. New construction also considers the use of water-saving low-flow urinals and toilets.
Students serve on the Recycle Program Enhancement Program and the Energy Awareness Committee. There is also an environmental awareness club. Greek organizations on campus run an annual recycling contest.
A new program at Creighton supplies free bus passes to the university community. The school also operates a shuttle system that extends into the community to assist students, faculty, and staff with their commutes. Facilities management is adding electric carts to its fleet, and the university works with master planners, adjacent neighborhoods, and local governments to encourage the development of bike paths.
The university makes neither its shareholder voting record nor its list of endowment holdings public.
The university aims to optimize investment return and does not invest in renewable energy funds or community development loan funds.
A member of the university administration determines proxy votes.
