The president recently approved a sustainability policy that outlines the college's sustainability goals, which will be implemented by the new Committee for Sustainability. William & Mary has created a full-time position to focus on energy efficiency and building practices, and one part-time staff member supports the campus recycling program.
The college completed a greenhouse gas inventory in the summer of 2007 and has created a ten-year plan that aims to reduce emissions by 34 percent. The college initiated an energy conservation program in 2002, and energy efficiency projects have been completed. Purchasing procedures encourage procurement of Energy Star appliances.
The college buys some local produce, dairy, and baked goods, and is working with the Virginia Cooperative Extension Agency to develop a schedule of local farms to supply products for the dining rooms. Campus cafes serve fair trade coffee and some organic items are available. Take-out locations use only biodegradable products, and dining services works with the Student Environmental Action Coalition to run a reusable mug program. Dining services will be expanding its composting program this year.
The college has a commitment to adhere to LEED standards for all new construction and major renovations. There are two LEED-certified buildings on campus and three new projects in the design stage will employ green building principles.
The Student Environmental Action Coalition is highly active on campus, working on initiatives in areas such as dining, energy, and recycling. Currently, the group is working on an energy campaign that focuses on reducing carbon emissions produced by the college. Sustainability presentations are given as part of freshman orientation and incoming students are given compact fluorescent bulbs to replace incandescent bulbs in desk and floor lamps.
The college has partnered with the local public transportation authority to allow students to ride at no cost. Students who carpool also receive parking privileges. There is a bike-sharing program.
