Spelman has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Environmental Protection Agency to collaborate on environmental initiatives, and an EPA staff member is currently working at Spelman to help with sustainability projects. The Environmental Task Force sponsored an African American Earth Day Summit.
Energy-efficient heating and cooling systems are being incorporated into the construction of a new residence hall.
Trayless dining saves the college more than one thousand gallons of water per week. An empty plate campaign reduces food waste. Spelman's recycling policy encourages the recycling of computer paper, ledger paper, newspaper, white high-grade and bond paper, and aluminum.
A LEED-certified residence hall is currently under construction; the design includes bicycle parking spaces and efficient lighting. The college is recycling construction materials.
Two interns were hired during the 2007–2008 academic year to manage recycling, promote expansion of the program, and educate the campus community. Students participate in the Campus Climate Challenge.
The Spelman shuttle circulates around campus and to various places throughout Atlanta. Discounts on monthly public transit cards are available for students, faculty, and staff.
